A NOTE TO OUR VISITORS
My name is Christine, and I have been involved with this incredible breed for over 30 years. I have always enjoyed the company of Cavaliers and equally treasured the wonderful clients who have been the main focus of our website and social media pages since their establishment. Having bred these beautiful dogs almost all of my adult life, there are a few things I've learned along the way. One important thing would be issues with their heart, which will unfortunately affect almost every Cavalier as they age. It is the weakness of this breed and I believe buyers should be informed of this. If a breeder tells you that their dogs are void of murmurs/MVD (especially after the age of 10), ask for a reference from a vet and cardiologist, as a claim like that would contradict every documented study over the last four decades.
The second is that I will not comment on or bash other breeders' dogs, breeding programs or methods of operation. A successful person or business will always focus on the positives of who they are and what they offer. They do not waste time pointing out the perceived shortcomings of another while simultaneously self-aggrandizing. Since our inception, we have never been "competition" concerned and have always been open to working with others. Over the past 30 years, we have helped dozens of new breeders put down roots while working with established breeders to enhance our programs. We will continue to make ourselves available to breeders old and new because we live by the motto that there is always room for improvement - a philosophy that benefits us, our dogs and our clients as well.
As a side note, our website will be celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year. We started placing ads in local publications, a time before cell phones and GPS too. There were few Cavalier breeders because the AKC didn't formally recognize them until 1996. ROYALFLUSHCAVALIERS.COM was purchased in 1999 and it was a big deal at the time. To put it in perspective, Walmart, Facebook, even the White House had just gotten their dot coms in the few years before RFC because less than half of US households were online at that time. It's really been quite the adventure, but what they say is true: If you do what you love you will never work a day in your life.
If you have any questions about our dogs or the breed, please feel free to email me!

Royal Flush Cavaliers In-a-Home Breeding Program TM Expands with New Pilot Program!
From time to time we will feature families that are part of our In-a-Home Breeding Program TM on our website and social media pages. These families play an integral role in how RFC humanely operates kennel free. Throughout the year we will feature the select families in the pilot program that are also raising the puppies from our lines as they work directly under us. This new part of Royal Flush Cavaliers allows these families an opportunity to establish their own breeding programs while giving both sides an opportunity to educate, expand and evolve.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MERLE DOGS
Do not believe what you read online. Verify with your vet or another professional!
MERLE DOGS DO NOT HAVE TO BE MIXED!
THEY CAN BE 100% DNA CAVALIER FROM AKC PARENTS BUT THE AKC DOES NOT REGISTER MERLE
ALL MERLE DOGS DO NOT HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS!
MOST MERLES CARRY A SINGLE COPY OF THE GENE AND THEY HAVE NO HEALTH ISSUES.
HEALTH ISSUES ARISE WITH DOUBLE MERLES WHICH HAVE TWO COPIES OF THE GENE.
DOUBLE MERLE DOGS ARE ALSO ALL WHITE WITH BLUE EYES.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS DO GENETIC TESTING TO AVOID A MERLE TO MERLE BREEDING.
We have personally seen dogs with multi-colored or blue eyes in our blenheim and ruby puppies in past years. We used to stop breeding lines producing them because we had no understanding of why it was happening. Now that DNA testing available is available to breeders, we are able to get answers to questions that we never could before to explore new and exciting possibilities.
WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE OVER IN-BREEDING?
The question begs an answer! Many that are upset about merles cite breed standards.
WHAT IS A BREED STANDARD?
THE AKC STANDARD FOR EACH BREED COMES FROM THE AKC RECOGNIZED PARENT CLUB FOR THAT BREED.
ONCE APPROVED, IT SERVES AS A BLUEPRINT FOR BREEDERS AND WHAT A JUDGE USES TO JUDGE IN THE SHOW RING.
HOW DOES A BREEDER ACHIEVE BREED STANDARD?
THE STANDARD DOES NOT TELL A BREEDER WHO AND HOW TO BREED THE DOGS THEY OWN AND AS A RESULT, THEY MAKE THE RULES AS THEY GO ALONG IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THAT BEST REPRESENTS THE DOG. SHOW BREEDERS ARE ESPECIALLY HYPER-FOCUSED ON ACHIEVING BREED STANDARD AND FIGURING OUT WHAT IT TAKES TO PRODUCE THE BEST LOOKING SPECIMEN TO WIN.
IF THEY ARE SHOWING AND FOCUSED ON THE BREED STANDARD THEN THAT'S A GOOD THING, RIGHT?
MANY SHOW PEOPLE PRACTICE LINE-BREEDING. LINE-BREEDING, ALSO KNOWN AS INBREEDING, IS THE PRACTICE OF BREEDING DOGS THAT ARE RELATED. SOME CLAIM TO DO THIS FOR SETTING TYPE AND SOLIDIFYING POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS IN THEIR BREEDING PROGRAM. THEY ALSO SAY THEY OUTCROSS PERIODICALLY TO MAINTAIN VIGOR AND VITALITY IN THEIR DOGS. THEY BREED AND INBREED TO GET WHAT THEY CONSIDER IN THEIR PERSONAL OPINION TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF THE STANDARD FROM THE LINES THEY ARE WORKING WITH, AND ULTIMATELY WIN SHOWS AND FINISH DOGS INTO CHAMPIONS.
THE AKC DOES NOT PREVENT SOMEONE REGISTERING INBRED DOGS
THE AKC HAS NO REQUIRED HEALTH STANDARD FOR EACH BREED AND WILL LET YOU REGISTER THE OFFSPRING OF ANY TWO AKC REGISTERED DOGS. THE REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION ARE THE BOTH PARENTS ARE AKC REGISTERED WITH THE DAM BEING AT LEAST 8 MONTHS OLD, SIRE BEING AT LEAST 7 MONTHS OLD AND BOTH NOT BEING MORE THAN 12 YEARS OLD - AND THAT'S IT.
THOUGH THEY FROWN ON SIBLING AND FATHER/DAUGHTER BREEDINGS, THEY WILL STILL REGISTER THEM.
WITHIN 20 YEARS OF THE CAVALIER BECOMING A BREED, WORLD WAR II HIT WITH DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES ALL AROUND. THE LARGEST KENNEL AT THE TIME WENT FROM 60 DOGS TO JUST 6, AND INBREEDING WAS NECESSARY TO SAVE THE BREED. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 80 YEARS SINCE THEN AND YET THERE ARE BREEDERS WHO STILL PRACTICE INBREEDING EVEN THOUGH THE RISKS CAN ALWAYS OUTWEIGH THE BENEFITS. IT IS ANY WONDER WHY CAVALIERS HAVE WON THE DUBIOUS DISTINCTION OF THE BREED WITH THE MOST DISEASE CAUSING MUTATIONS? THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO INBREED A DOG AND IF YOU FEEL THAT IS WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BEST RESEMBLE THE STANDARD AND WIN SHOWS THEN MAYBE WE NEED TO RETHINK THINGS.
BREEDERS INBREED TO WIN SHOWS AND WITH THAT COMES POWER AND INFLUENCE.
SOME EUROPEAN ROYALS IN HISTORY DID THE SAME AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT:
THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO BREEDERS THROUGH PEDIGREES AND DNA TO ENSURE OPTIMAL BREEDING AND BETTER DOGS. ALL PUREBREDS ARE INBRED IN SOME CAPACITY, BUT PEDIGREES, DNA AND COI ARE THE BEST TOOLS A BREEDER CAN USE TO AVOID FURTHER UNNECESSARY INBREEDING OF ANY LINES. IF YOU HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS SPECIFIC TO MERLE HEALTH OR GENETICS, IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO DEFER TO YOUR VET OR A PROFESSIONAL. THERE ARE A LOT OF ARTICLES AND OPINIONS ONLINE BUT A PRO KNOWS BEST.
- PLEASE READ -
If you would like information on our pups, please email us.
We'll apprise you of availability and add you to our waiting list.
We do not charge to be added to our waiting list and we cannot guarantee your wait time.
We have wait lists always running but the process is very fluid so the waiting period is too.
Please know that the majority of our client base returns for another; past clients do take precedence.
We breed all colors and have litters throughout the year.
OUR PROCESS
You are added to our waiting list and we notify you after the puppies are born.
We cannot guarantee wait time as it is impossible to predict future litters, how many puppies and so on.
Once we begin the application process and once complete we take a small deposit.
The application is very straightforward and it gives us a chance to get to know the potential placement home.
Depositors are provided with a login and can view litters from birth through placement with our LIVE cam.
- Note that LIVE cam is visual only. There is no audio since this camera is live in our home.
We do not allow visitors until pups have their first vaccinations which is generally 6-8 weeks of age.
We do not expose newborn puppies to the general public and they have to have their first shot before you can visit.
Placement date will ultimately be determined by our veterinarian at their final exam.
Puppies see the vet at 8 weeks for their final exam and it is at this appointment where he determines if they are ready.
You will go home with a copy of our contract with all pertinent information needed for your first vet visit.
Clients will also go home with a gift bag that includes items to assist with puppy's transition into their new home.
OUR GUARANTEE
WE WILL REPLACE ANY PUPPY THAT SUCCUMBS TO PREMATURE HEART DISEASE/MVD BY THE AGE OF 5. WE HAVE BEEN OFFERING THIS GUARANTEE FOR 25 YEARS AND DO NOT REQUIRE YOU TO RETURN YOUR PUPPY. WE ALSO DO NOT REQUIRE YOU TO PURCHASE SPECIAL FOOD OR SUPPLEMENTS TO KEEP THE GUARANTEE IN EFFECT.
Many companies entice breeders to push their products on clients by offering commissions and incentives. We know this because they are constantly contacting us to join them. Regardless of the product, how it is being presented, or its suppositional benefits, a breeder who forces a food or supplement on you to keep their guarantee in effect may be doing so for an opportunity to profit off of you and your dog. We will make suggestions about products we use but we do not require you to buy anything for us to honor our guarantee. We believe decisions related to the health and wellness of your dog are best discussed with your veterinarian and should not be . We do strongly encourage buyers to consider pet insurance as a matter of practicality.

- PLEASE NOTE -
OUR DOGS ARE AKC REGISTERED
Registration is for people purchasing to breed or show. If you are considering a puppy to breed or show, you must mention this in your initial email and not after purchase. Breed and show contracts are different than a pet purchase where you would not receive this. If you are looking to show or breed we will consider a co-ownership only - no exceptions. We do a contract with co-ownership so that we maintain some control over how the lines are developed for the future.

WE HAVE A PILOT PROGRAM FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CO-OWNERSHIP AND SHOWING.
Though we are not personally showing our dogs, some have been placed on show contracts and have been active in the show ring. We are currently seeking interested families who want to participate in our CHAMPION COMPANION CAVALIER PROGRAM TM. This is a program designed for people looking for a loving companion that are also interested in showing recreationally. Whether it be conformation, obedience, or agility, we would love to discuss options to tailor a program specific to you and your canine compadre. If this program interests you, call or email us for more information.

WE DO NOT MICROCHIP YOUR PUPPY AND BELIEVE THIS IS SOMETHING BEST LEFT TO YOUR VET.
A breeder can go on Amazon and purchase bulk microchip packages that amount to less than $2 per puppy. Though the overwhelming majority of chips are fine, there is always an occasional recall for anything from chip failure to cancerous growths at the implantation site. Your veterinarian is the only one kept abreast of such recalls and would notify you if a removal or replacement is needed. Is it really worth the $20 saved?

WE DO NOT GIVE OUT MEDICAL ADVICE ON ILLNESS OR VACCINATIONS AND BELIEVE THIS TOO IS BEST LEFT TO YOUR VET.
It is irresponsible for a breeder to dole out advice on medical treatments and vaccinations. Yes, you gain information and experience along the way but at the end of the day, I am not a doctor. I did not go to medical school and I am not licensed to practice medicine. If my dog is sick I go to the vet - and you should too. Would you take medical advice for your sick child from their teacher? Hopefully not. They may work with kids all day and see a lot through the years, but they too are not in a position to give medical instruction. If you don't have the best relationship with your vet, then you should definitely find a new one. If you want a referral to my wonderful vet I am happy to give you one.

CHARITY - If you or someone you know runs or works for a charity, feel free to contact us. We enjoy working with charities, especially ones for children. It is important to note that when we say "work with" we mean DONATE to. Although most charities pay breeders for their puppies while the breeder accepts the accolades, we will not charge your charity for our puppy. They are given to these children completely free of charge so that the funds can be used to grant the wish of another child. We do a standard application and and then placement of the puppy. We have happily worked with various charities throughout the years, including the Make A Wish Foundation. If you know of a charity seeking a Cavalier please call or email us.

Is your Cavalier breeder breeding Cavalier King Charles Spaniels or English Toy Spaniels presented as Cavaliers?
English Toy Spaniels (known as King Charles Spaniels in England) are an entirely different breed than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. There are so many similarities that I thought it would be a good idea to to help people differentiate.
Let's start with some background - King Charles II (their namesake) was an avid fan of his spaniels which at the time had elongated noses. After his death, Pugs and other like breeds became popular, so people bred them to the King's spaniels and the look evolved into the English Toy Spaniel that we know today. In the 1920s, Roswell Eldridge was seeking one of the old spaniels and could not find one, so he proposed a challenge to breeders at Crufts Dog Show to bring it back. The challenge was accepted, a standard set, and the CAVALIER King Charles Spaniel was born.
Both of these breeds come in the same four colors and have similar personalities, but they are separate and distinct registered breeds with the AKC. English Toy Spaniels have short muzzles and pushed in faces, while Cavaliers have elongated noses with proportionate faces. English Toy Spaniels are 8-14 lbs and Cavaliers are 13-18lbs, which is why some try to pass them off as "toy" Cavaliers. Both are known to have heart valve issues, but English Toy Spaniels are known to have breathing problems because of their short muzzles. Both breeds are also known to be potentially susceptible to neurological issues but English Toy Spaniels are more prone to these types of issues because of the size and shape of their heads.
We think that both breeds are adorable, but if you're looking for a Cavalier make sure your breeder is breeding Cavaliers and not English Toys. They are NOT the same breed.
