About the Cavalier
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a breed of toy dog that was first developed in the United Kingdom in the late 1600s. These small dogs are known for their playful, friendly personalities and their affinity for human companionship. As such, they’re incredibly popular dogs today, and any Cav owner will tell you that you’re missing out by not having one to call your own. If you remain unconvinced about adopting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, here are some fun facts to know about them:
1. They’re Full of Love
Cavs are the epitome of friendliness and love. They are incredibly affectionate with their family and enjoy being around other animals, children, and even people they have never met before.
Seriously, this breed loves to make new friends!
2. Their Eyes Are Their Shining Hallmark
Their eyes, deep brown and comforting, create a soft, inviting look that contributes to their kind disposition. If there is anything about them that you’ll instantly recognize, it would be their eyes.
It truly is their hallmark.
3. They’re Also Sporting Dogs
Cavaliers have an innate urge to hunt, even those with the best of training. For that reason, it is recommended that they be kept on a leash while in public or have a securely enclosed space to play in at home, as they may be too focused on chasing after small animals to listen to commands.
They will chase anything from a bee to a bird.
4. They’re Named After Royalty
King Charles I and his son had a deep attachment to their spaniels. Charles II would bring them wherever he went, and some say he made an official rule that the dogs could go into any public area.
The breed was named in honor of the royal family.
5. They’re Naturally Athletic
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a breed that is naturally very athletic and eager to learn new things. This makes them well-suited for participating in sports like agility, rally, and obedience.
They do exceptionally well in all of the above!
6. They’re Therapeutic
If you have a Cavalier that is gentle and affectionate, consider enrolling them in the American Kennel Club’s Therapy Dog Program. This program can be of great benefit to you and your dog.
Cavaliers were originally bred to be companion animals.
7. They Come in Four Colors
The unique coats of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel comes in several colors and patterns. The most popular are Blenheim, which has chestnut markings on a white background and a white blaze between the ears. Some have the "queen's thumbprint" which is a lozenge-shaped marking on the top of its head. The second color is the tricolor, which is blank and white with tan markings around the eyes, cheeks, ears and tail. The third is Ruby, which is a deep red color all over. Finally, there's the Black and Tan, which is black with tan markings, including around the eyes, chest and legs.
There are more, but these are the top four.
